The Chart Nobody Uses (And Why That's a Problem)

Open any school's annual report. Any NGO impact document. Any therapy center's progress summary.

You'll find bar charts.

Always bar charts. Reading scores this year vs. last year. Attendance up 12%. Dropout rate down. The bars go up, everyone claps, the document gets filed, and nobody asks the question underneath the numbers: what actually happened to this child?

The bar chart is the most trusted visualization in human development. It's also, quietly, the most dishonest.

Here's what a bar chart tells you: how much.

Here's what a bar chart cannot tell you: what kind.

A child's reading score went from 40 to 70. The bar went up. But was that because she finally found a book she cared about? Because her home situation stabilized? Because one facilitator spent three Tuesdays in a row on phonics specifically with her? Because the anxiety that was blocking her cognition got addressed before anyone touched the reading?

The bar doesn't know. The bar was never designed to know.

The bar chart is a photograph of an outcome with no memory of the journey.

There's another chart. Older, actually. Less fashionable. Rarely used in education or development work.

The spider web. The radar chart. The one that looks like a web, five or six or eight axes radiating from the center, each axis a different dimension, the shape of the data telling you something the numbers alone never could.

Plot a child across: communication, self-regulation, peer interaction, task persistence, emotional expression, sensory processing. All six at once. And something happens that a bar chart can never produce.

You see the shape of the person.

Not just "she improved." But: strong in communication, early-stage in self-regulation, making real movement in peer interaction. The shape tells you where to look. The shape tells you what's connected. The shape tells you what the bar chart buries in its tidiness.

No bar chart produces that. Twelve bars and your brain is doing inventory. The web gives you a silhouette and you just get it.

So how do you actually build one that works.

Because most radar charts don't. Most radar charts are six random dimensions someone brainstormed in a meeting, plotted without thinking, and shipped in a PDF that nobody questioned. The shape looks interesting. It means nothing.

Here's what separates a radar chart that works from one that just looks like a radar chart.

Pick axes that are genuinely independent.

If two of your axes move together — if a child who's high on "peer interaction" is almost always also high on "communication" — you don't have two dimensions. You have one dimension with two labels. Your polygon will always bulge in the same corner. The shape will tell you nothing you didn't already know.

Correlated axes

Same shape every time. The polygon always bulges the same way.

Independent axes

The shape is the insight. Each axis tells you something different.

Test: could you imagine a child who scores high on axis A but low on axis B? If not, they're probably the same axis. Cut one.

Four to eight axes. Not three. Not twelve.

3 axes

Just a triangle. Biggest side wins. Not a profile.

6 axes

The sweet spot. Enough facets to be interesting. Few enough to read.

12 axes

Wallpaper. Labels overlap. Shape loses resolution.

Six because they're genuinely independent, six because a practitioner can hold six in their head, and six because the resulting hexagon gives you a shape with enough facets to be interesting without being unreadable.

Axis order is not decoration. It's meaning.

Adjacent axes on a radar chart look related. The eye connects them. If you put "emotional expression" next to "self-regulation," you're implying a relationship — and you'd better mean it.

Grouped neighbours

Inward dimensions cluster left. Outward cluster right. The split reads clearly.

Scrambled order

Same child. Same scores. But the shape implies false connections.

Think of the hexagon as a neighbourhood. Axes that are conceptually related should be neighbours. Axes that are conceptually distant should sit across from each other.

Scale every axis the same way. Without exception.

A radar chart with inconsistent axis scales is not a radar chart. It's a confidence trick. If "communication" runs from 0–10 and "sensory processing" runs from 0–5, the shape is meaningless — you've just made one axis twice as important as another without telling anyone.

If your raw data is on different scales, normalize before you plot. This is not optional.

When to use it. When not to.

Use the radar chart when: you're tracking a profile across genuinely independent dimensions. When the question is "what kind of thing is this" rather than "how much." When you want to compare two entities holistically — two students, two cohorts, this child at two points in time. When the shape is the insight.

Do not use it when: you need precise values. The area of a radar polygon grows geometrically, not linearly — a small bump on one axis inflates the visible area disproportionately. If someone needs to audit exact numbers, give them a table. The radar is for understanding, not auditing.

Do not use it when you have fewer than four dimensions or more than eight. Do not use it when your axes aren't independent. Do not use it as a substitute for actually having the underlying observation data — a radar chart built on vibes and estimated scores is worse than no chart, because it performs rigor it doesn't have.

The overlay is where it gets powerful.

A single radar chart is a snapshot. But a radar chart overlaid with a previous period is a story. The grey ghost of last term sitting underneath the purple shape of this term — that gap is where the conversation starts. Not "she improved by 12%." But: "look at how self-regulation moved while sensory processing stayed flat. what changed? what didn't?"

That's the question worth asking in a review meeting. And the overlay is what makes it visible.

Which is exactly why the next thing to show you is time.

The shape doesn't just grow. It changes character. Self-regulation is finally moving in term three — slowly, but moving. Peer interaction and task persistence are pulling each other forward. That's not a number going up. That's a story. A bar chart would have given you one bar. One bar, one number, one very incomplete truth.

The founders who are serious about human development — the ones actually trying to understand what's happening to the people in their programs, not just what the numbers say — already know the bar chart isn't enough.

They've felt it. In every review meeting where someone shows them a score going up and they still don't know why. In every handover where a child's history has to be rebuilt from scratch. In every funder conversation where they know the real story but can't show it.

The spider web isn't just a better chart. It's a different question.

Not: how much did they improve?

But: who are they becoming?
